Ctenochromis horei
Ctenochromis horei is one of the most unusual Tanganyikan cichlids. It is a mouthbrooding haplochromine, with a spectacular coloration in adult males. It is found all over the Lake, and in several of the surrounding rivers.
These young adults, approximately 2 inches, are F2 and are from 3 different spawns.
The males are unusually intolerant of other males, so these fish must be in large groups, including at least 3 females per male, or in a group of one male and at least 3 females. One male and 7 females is an ideal group size. The males grow to 7 inches or more, so they need at least a 75 gallon tank. And they normally live in and among plants, so at least one or two groups of Vallisneria is beneficial.
